Black History Month employee spotlight: Sommer Cummings
At Abstract, we’re lucky to be celebrating this month by shouting out some dope teammates who are helping create Black History in the tech industry today. Check out part of what makes Sales Development Representative Sommer Cummings special.
What personal passions bring you to Abstract?
I'm very passionate about having diversity in my life. I love having friends and coworkers from different backgrounds and walks of life. I love working at Abstract because we all share these views and inclusion is a huge focus.
What’s one childhood lesson that you still carry with you to this day?
"What's for you, is for you" is an idea that I truly believe in. Growing up, there were times that I looked at other people's accomplishments and compared them to my own. More times than not, there was something equally as amazing for me right around the corner. I've carried this motto with me into adulthood because I've learned that comparison is the thief of joy.
Tell us about where you grew up and what makes it unique.
I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. Arizona is the desert and is VERY hot. There were days that we had excessive heat warnings and we were encouraged to stay indoors. Arizona's landscape is also very beautiful. The Valley of the Sun is surrounded by an extensive mountain range that can be seen from anywhere in the city. The Grand Canyon also offers breathtaking views and is a must-see for anyone who has never visited.
What are you most proud of in your life/career?
I am grateful for the place that I am in my life. I am proud of my resilience and ability to accomplish the goals I set for myself. I am also so lucky that I enjoy my job and the company that I work for.
What's your favorite hype song and why?
"Despacito" by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber is my absolute fave hype song. I played it on repeat when it first came out and still love it to this day. It always helps me get through a tough workout.
You get to have dinner with one famous person. Who do you choose and what would you ask them?
Beyonce would be my dream dinner guest. I think she is perfect! I'm sure I would be completely speechless, but if I was able to get past the initial shock of her presence I would ask her, "What events led up to that day in the elevator?"
